Geography as a discipline encompasses a tremendous number of aspects of our human and physical world. In simple terms, we use geography every day, from deciding what store to shop at, determining the route to that store, where to park once we arrive, and so forth. We constantly analyze our environment, making decisions based on physical and human patterns. Geography is a wonderfully diverse discipline! Geography can be broken into a couple of areas: physical geography and human geography. Physical geography includes such things as the distribution of soil types, climates, vegetation, plus desertification, orogeny (mountain-building), and hydrologic processes. Human geography encompasses all things human, our language, religion, migration, history, race, our politics, our music, our food, and so on. |
